If you’re an actor, model or photographer, you’ll no doubt be familiar with comp cards; the go-to marketing tool for showcasing the best of your portfolio.
Coincidentally, they’re also known as ‘zed cards’ – not to be confused with the concertina cards we print here at zFold.co.uk
But maybe they should be confused with them – because when you think about it, Z-fold cards are perfect for modelling comp cards. Here’s why…
More space for more shots
A typical comp card is printed on an 8.5” by 5.5” (or 21.59cm by 13.97cm) sheet of glossy cardstock, which only provides limited space for your shots. You’ll almost certainly have to leave a couple of your favourites off the finished card in order to fit everything in.
Meanwhile, a folded-up 8.5” by 5.5” Z-fold will still fit neatly in a casting director’s drawer; but it offers so much more print space for showing off your very best work. Even an A7 size Z-fold (105mm by 74mm) can hold a sheet which – when unfolded – knocks the standard comp card size out of the water.
You could perhaps include your most recent shots on the outer covers of your Z-fold card, and use the inner sheet to display a more extensive selection of your portfolio (and maybe an extended biography, filmography or list of stage credits, too). That way, even the busiest of casting directors can get an idea of your work without having to open up the card.
A memorable tactile experience
That said, most recipients won’t be able to resist opening up your Z-fold card and revealing the portfolio shots inside. There’s something uniquely satisfying about opening a Z-fold’s covers and unfurling the folded sheet inside; not to mention folding it all back up neat and tidy!
And when you’re competing for gigs with countless other talented individuals across the industry, that satisfying tactile experience can make all the difference for making an impression on casting agents.
Put it this way; if you had to sift through a hundred flat sheets of cardstock, and one which you had to physically unfold to view in full, which one are you most likely to remember?
As portable as a business card
The standard 8.5” by 5.5” comp card also isn’t the most convenient item for face-to-face networking events. They’re just slightly too big to carry around comfortably; which means they’re just as much a pain for you as they are for recipients.
But with the Z-fold format, a 8.5” by 5.5” sheet can be condensed into a form that fits neatly in a pocket or wallet – a lifesaver if you happen to bump into one of your industry heroes and stumble upon a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity…
